Pretty. Maintaining the Balayage.

Not sure if all you other balayage haired gals out there agree with me, but sometimes I feel that looking after my hair is like looking after two completely different heads of hair. My roots get greasy easily and my regrowth is depressingly a bit grey, plus, obviously, the top of my head is brunette. My ends get desert dry and lack lustre and again, is obviously blonde. Maintaining my long and multi problem hair can be a challenge, but lately I feel as though I have the hang of it, so thought I would share my thoughts with you. So here goes...

My Top Ten Tips for Maintaining Balayage Hair
  1. Don't wash your hair everyday. I used to be a daily shampoo freak; I couldn't cope with even slightly dirt hair. Thankfully I have now reached a stage where I can go three days without washing and my hair thanks me for it. My ends get less dry and my roots have adjusted to the new routine well.
  2. If you are like me and oil is a problem, invest in a quality dry shampoo. I can't tell you how much of a difference using one of these has made for me. I use Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with oat milk but I really want to try the Body Shop one if I can get my hands on it (darn country towns)
  3. Regular hair trims. If you are brave (or cheap?) like me you can trim your own hair, but if hairdressers are your thing then that's fine. I feel like taking the last cm of my hair every four weeks or so really helps the ends stay looking nice.
  4. If you are like me and you blow dry and style your hair a lot, then you must, must, must get a thermal protection spray. I use De Lorenzo Elements Extinguish. It uses certified organic Australian native plant extracts. Also a bonus, De Lorenzo do not test on animals.
  5. Argan oil, or Moroccan oil, is a life saver for bleached and damaged hair. I always used just a generic brand that my Mum had, but now I am loving the Silk Oil of Morocco
  6. I learned this tip whilst watching one of Tanya Burr's YouTube videos. Her Hair dresser mentioned it and ever since then I have stuck to his advice. I only shampoo my scalp because according to him, the water washing the shampoo suds down your hair when rinsing, is enough to clean the rest of your hair.
  7. This next tip is the opposite of the one previous. Only condition the ends of your hair then with whatever is left on your hands, lightly run your fingers through the mid sections. This will help create more of a balance and prevent excessive oil on your scalp.
  8. I try to use a good purple toner at least once a fortnight just through the ends of my hair to cancel out any brassy or really orange tones. I use Swatzkopf Nordic Blondes Toner.
  9. Purple of blue shampoo's are also handy for maintaining those cool blonde tones. I use Lee Stafford Bleach Blondes shampoo just on the ends of my hair every two weeks or so.
  10. Don't pull, rub or aggravate your hair. Softly towel dry, or do what I do and absorb excess water with a few tissues. Brushing your hair whilst wet is also a big no no as it will easily break and ruin your lovely locks!
Got any tips I haven't covered? Tell me about them in the comments.

EDITED ADD: I totally forgot to mention deep conditioning treatments-they work wonders.

  3. Give it a go! I am actually heading towards the more accidental/natural look (the really blonde ends are gone!) but only because my hair has been sooo dry lately! x
